AutoCAD Tip: Optimize AutoCAD Productivity with Quick Access Toolbar Customization

The Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) is one of AutoCAD’s simplest productivity tools, yet it is often underused. Located above or below the Ribbon, it provides persistent access to the commands you use most—regardless of the active Ribbon tab. A well-configured QAT reduces navigation time, keeps essential tools visible, and helps create a more focused drafting environment.

Start by reviewing the commands you use repeatedly during a normal drawing session. The default toolbar typically includes New, Open, Save, Save As, Plot, Undo, and Redo. These are useful basics, but the real advantage comes from adding commands that support your personal workflow.

  • Add frequent commands: Right-click a command on the Ribbon, a toolbar, or in some menus, then choose Add to Quick Access Toolbar. Common additions include Layer Properties, Match Properties, Purge, Plot Preview, Properties, and DesignCenter.
  • Use command repetition wisely: Add commands that are used many times per day but are buried in different Ribbon panels. This avoids switching tabs just to access one tool.
  • Place the QAT where it works best: Click the QAT customization arrow and choose Show Below the Ribbon when you want more horizontal room for command icons. Keeping it above the Ribbon can preserve vertical drawing space on smaller displays.
  • Reorder for speed: Place your most critical buttons near the left side of the toolbar, where they are easier to reach and recognize. Keep related tools together—for example, Save, Plot Preview, Plot, and Publish.

A practical QAT should support your workflow without becoming another crowded toolbar. Avoid adding every command you may occasionally need. Instead, reserve the QAT for commands that meet at least one of these criteria:

  • You use the command several times each day.
  • The command is located on a Ribbon tab you do not normally keep open.
  • The command is important enough that you want it constantly visible.
  • The command helps protect work, such as Save, Save As, Audit, Recover, or Plot Preview.

For example, a production drafter may prioritize Layer Properties, Match Properties, Properties, Purge, and Plot. A CAD manager may include CAD Standards, Layer Translator, Reference Manager-related tools, and drawing cleanup commands. A 3D user may prefer Visual Styles, Render, Section Plane, and viewport controls. The best QAT is not universal—it reflects the work you actually perform.

To remove an item, right-click its icon and select Remove from Quick Access Toolbar. Review the toolbar periodically, especially after adopting new standards, tools, or project types. Small refinements can save many clicks over the life of a project.

For teams, consider documenting a recommended QAT configuration as part of your CAD standards. This can help new users access essential quality-control and documentation commands more consistently. Pairing a streamlined AutoCAD interface with the right software, training, and workflow resources available from NOVEDGE can further improve drafting efficiency.

The key is intentional customization: make your most valuable AutoCAD commands available at all times, keep the toolbar concise, and let the interface support your workflow rather than interrupt it.
