AutoCAD Tip: Master Multiple-Grip Editing in AutoCAD

When editing geometry in AutoCAD, grips offer a fast alternative to repeatedly launching commands. Selecting multiple grips lets you modify several vertices, endpoints, or control points in one operation—especially useful for polylines, hatches, blocks, and complex linework.

Start by selecting an object. Its editable points appear as small blue squares, commonly called cold grips. To activate more than one grip, hold Shift and click each point you want to include. The selected grips change appearance, indicating that they are ready for a shared edit.

  • Shift-click additional grips to add them to the active grip set.
  • Shift-click an active grip again to remove it from the set.
  • Click one of the selected grips to make it the hot grip and begin editing.
  • Move the cursor or enter an exact value to complete the modification.

This technique is particularly effective with polylines. For example, imagine a room outline that needs to be widened without changing its overall shape. Instead of stretching each corner individually, select the polyline, Shift-click the two vertices along one wall, activate either selected grip, and move them together. The wall shifts as a unit while the adjacent segments update automatically.

Multiple grip editing can also streamline revisions to repeated details. If several points on a boundary must move by the same offset, activate the relevant grips and use object snaps, Polar Tracking, or direct distance entry to control the result precisely. Entering a distance at the command line is often safer than relying solely on visual placement, particularly in production drawings.

Once a grip is hot, AutoCAD’s default action is typically Stretch. Press Enter or the Spacebar to cycle through the available grip-edit modes, which can include:

  • Stretch — moves selected vertices while reshaping connected geometry.
  • Move — relocates the selected grip points without the normal stretch behavior where supported.
  • Rotate — rotates the object or selected grip configuration around a base point.
  • Scale — resizes the object relative to the grip base point.
  • Mirror — creates a mirrored copy or mirrors the edited object, depending on the object type and settings.

Use this workflow carefully on objects that carry design intent. A dimension, associative hatch, dynamic block, or externally referenced element may respond differently from a simple polyline. Before making extensive changes, verify layer locks, object associations, and any constraints that could affect the edit. If a result is not as expected, use UNDO immediately rather than trying to repair geometry manually.

For cleaner grip workflows, avoid selecting unnecessary objects before beginning. Use a crossing or window selection to isolate the target geometry, then refine the edit by Shift-clicking only the points that should move. Turning on appropriate Object Snaps—such as Endpoint, Midpoint, Intersection, and Perpendicular—helps ensure that the final location is accurate.
