AutoCAD Tip: Managing Raster Image References in AutoCAD

Image references let you display raster files—such as site photos, scanned sketches, logos, aerial imagery, or markups—inside an AutoCAD drawing without embedding the image data directly in the DWG. Managing them well keeps drawings coordinated, portable, and efficient.

Attach an image with the IMAGEATTACH command, or use Attach from the External References palette. AutoCAD supports common raster formats including PNG, JPG, TIFF, BMP, and several others. Once attached, the image behaves as a reference object: you can move, scale, rotate, clip, fade, and control its display properties without modifying the original file.

  • Use a dependable folder structure. Store image files in a dedicated project folder, ideally alongside related DWG and reference files. Avoid keeping essential images only in temporary locations such as Downloads, email attachments, or a personal desktop.
  • Prefer relative paths for team projects. In the External References palette, select the image reference and review its saved path. Relative paths are usually more portable than absolute paths because they continue to work when the whole project folder is moved or shared.
  • Use a standard project hierarchy. For example, place drawings in a DWG folder and raster files in an Images folder beneath the same project root. This makes reference paths predictable and easier to repair.
  • Do not use images as a substitute for CAD geometry. A raster image is excellent for background context, existing-condition photos, and scanned information. However, dimensions, linework, notes, and other deliverable data should be created as native AutoCAD objects whenever possible.

After insertion, use the Properties palette to manage an image precisely. Key settings include:

  • Brightness, contrast, and fade: Fade is particularly useful for aerial photographs or scanned plans that need to remain visible without overpowering new CAD linework.
  • Transparency: Enable transparency when working with PNG files or other images that contain transparent pixels. Also confirm that TRANSPARENCYDISPLAY is enabled if the effect is not visible on screen.
  • Display quality: Use lower-quality display settings during demanding editing sessions if large images affect performance; restore higher quality for review and plotting.
  • Image frame: Control the boundary with the IMAGEFRAME system variable. A useful setting is 2, which displays and plots the frame, or 0 to hide it completely. Check your office plotting standard before choosing a value.

For cleaner sheets, use IMAGECLIP to crop an image to a rectangular or polygonal boundary. Clipping is non-destructive: AutoCAD hides the unwanted portion but does not alter the source file. This is ideal for showing only the relevant area of a large aerial image or scan.

When an image displays as “Not Found,” open the External References palette and locate the missing reference. Right-click it, choose Select New Path, and browse to the correct raster file. If the same path issue affects multiple files, use the Reference Manager to update paths in batch.

Before issuing a drawing, use ETRANSMIT to package the DWG together with its dependent files, including attached images. This prevents broken references when consultants, clients, or coworkers open the drawing on another system.
