Today, we will explore a powerful feature in AutoCAD that can significantly enhance your drafting efficiency: Understanding and Using Grips.

Grips provide a quick and intuitive way to manipulate objects directly in the drawing area without needing to start a command. Here are some key points to understand and use grips effectively:

  • Selection of Grips: Click on an object to highlight it, and you will see small squares or triangles, known as grips, appear at strategic points on the object. These points can be at the endpoints, midpoints, or vertices, depending on the type of object.
  • Moving Objects: Click and drag a grip to move the entire object. This method is particularly useful for quickly repositioning objects without entering any commands.
  • Stretching Objects: Select a grip and press Enter to activate the stretch mode. This allows you to extend or shorten lines, rectangles, and other shapes dynamically.
  • Rotating Objects: To rotate an object using grips, select a grip, hold the Shift key, and then click on another point to specify the rotation angle.
  • Scaling Objects: Grips can also be used to scale objects. Select a grip, press Ctrl, and move the grip to scale the object uniformly from the selected grip point.
  • Mirroring and Copying: Utilize grips to quickly mirror or copy objects by selecting a grip and holding the Ctrl key while dragging.
  • Advanced Grip Editing: For more complex modifications, such as editing polyline vertices or 3D faces, grips provide precise control. Hover over a grip to access additional options like "Add Vertex" or "Convert to Arc" for polylines.

Mastering the use of grips can dramatically speed up your drafting process and reduce the need to switch between different commands. This hands-on approach to object manipulation is a fundamental skill for any AutoCAD user.
