Switching cleanly between World and Object UCS keeps your geometry precise and your views aligned with minimal clicks.
What to use, and when:
- World UCS (UCS W): Best for base setup, survey coordinates, standard dimensions, and plotting. Always return to World before publishing or exchanging files.
- Object UCS (UCS OB): Aligns the workplane to a selected edge, polyline, or face. Ideal for drafting on rotated plans, façades, or planar faces of solids.
Core shortcuts you’ll use all day:
- UCS W — reset to World
- UCS OB — align to a selected object (line, polyline, face)
- UCS P — return to Previous UCS (great for quick toggles)
- PLAN Current or PLAN W — align the view to the current or World UCS for true-orthographic drawing
- DUCS (F6) — Dynamic UCS for temporary face-aligned drafting in 3D
Fast workflows:
- Rotated 2D wings or façades:
- UCS OB, pick the rotated edge
- PLAN Current
- Draft with orthogonal tools; dimensions will be true to that wing
- UCS W when finished; PLAN W to restore global view
- 3D face drafting:
- Toggle DUCS (F6) to hover-align on a planar face
- For a persistent setup, use UCS OB on that face
- Use PLAN Current to work normal to the face
- Quick check and reset:
- UCSICON ON; set to ORigin to visualize axes at 0,0,0
- UCS P to bounce back if you misalign; UCS W for a clean slate
System variables that help:
- UCSDETECT = 1 enables automatic alignment to planar faces while hovering
- UCSFOLLOW = 0 keeps the view from auto-twisting in Model Space when you switch UCS
- DUCSFRAME = 1 shows the temporary DUCS boundary for clarity
Common pitfalls to avoid:
- Dimension orientation: Place most sheet-ready dimensions in World UCS to avoid rotated text unless intentionally aligned locally.
- Blocks and Xrefs: Insert and orient in World; switch to Object UCS only for local edits to prevent compounded rotations.
- Forgetting PLAN: After changing UCS, use PLAN Current for true orthographic views and predictable ortho/Polar behavior.
Micro-automation (CUI macros you can assign to a button or keyboard):
- World one-click:
^C^C_UCS;W;PLAN;W; - Object align then view:
^C^C_UCS;OB;\\PLAN;C;(pick object, then align the view) - Previous toggle:
^C^C_UCS;P;PLAN;C;
Pro tip: Save named UCSs for recurring orientations in complex models; combine with Named Views for rapid context switches.
