Publishing multiple layouts is one of the fastest ways to create a coordinated drawing set from AutoCAD. Instead of plotting sheets one at a time, use the PUBLISH command to send selected layouts to a single multi-sheet PDF, separate PDF files, DWF files, or physical plotters. This workflow reduces repetitive setup, improves consistency, and makes issue-ready documentation far easier to manage.
Begin by confirming that every layout is ready to print. Each sheet should have the correct page setup, plot style table, paper size, orientation, viewport scale, and title block information. The publishing process uses those saved layout settings, so a clean page setup is the foundation of reliable batch output.
A valuable habit is to publish layouts rather than Model space whenever possible. Layouts are designed for documentation: they can contain title blocks, plotted notes, sheet-specific viewport scales, and page setup settings. Model space can be included when necessary, but it often lacks the presentation control required for a formal drawing issue.
Before selecting Publish, open Publish Options. Here, choose whether AutoCAD creates:
For most client deliverables, a multi-sheet PDF is practical because recipients receive one controlled file instead of a folder of separate sheets. Use a clear naming convention that identifies the project, issue type, and date, such as ProjectName_ConstructionSet_2026-08-20.pdf. Avoid overwriting previously issued files unless your document-control process specifically requires it.
Consistency is critical. If layouts use different page setups, AutoCAD can still publish them, but the resulting set may contain unexpected paper sizes, plot styles, or orientations. Consider creating standardized page setups and importing them into project drawings. This is especially useful for teams that need repeatable PDF settings across many files. AutoCAD tools and professional workflow resources are available through NOVEDGE’s Autodesk collection.
For recurring issues, save the selected sheet list as a Drawing Set Descriptions (DSD) file. A DSD file stores the publishing configuration, including selected drawings, layouts, and output choices. Reusing it can dramatically reduce setup time for weekly progress sets, permit packages, or internal review submissions.
Finally, inspect the published PDF before distribution. Check sheet order, viewport scales, lineweights, transparency, plotted layer visibility, and title block data. A quick quality-control review catches problems that are much more costly after documents reach a client or contractor. For AutoCAD software, licensing, and CAD workflow tools, visit NOVEDGE.
