Grip editing is one of the fastest ways to modify geometry in AutoCAD without repeatedly launching separate editing commands. When you select an object, the small blue squares that appear are called grips. They provide direct, visual control over key points of an object, allowing you to move, stretch, rotate, scale, or mirror geometry efficiently.
For drafters who make frequent design adjustments, grips can significantly reduce the number of clicks and command entries required. The key is understanding which grips are available and how AutoCAD interprets the point you select.
By default, activating a grip starts the Stretch behavior. This is particularly useful for changing the length of a line, adjusting a polyline vertex, resizing a rectangle, or repositioning the endpoint of an arc. For example, select a polyline, activate a vertex grip, and enter a relative distance such as @12,0 to move that vertex exactly 12 drawing units horizontally.
Grip editing becomes even more versatile when you cycle through its standard modes:
Many AutoCAD objects include multifunctional grips that offer object-specific tools. Hover over a grip on a polyline, hatch, dimension, multileader, or block and pause briefly. A shortcut menu may appear with relevant options, such as adding or removing a polyline vertex, changing an arc segment, modifying hatch origins, or repositioning dimension text.
Use grips with object snaps enabled for dependable results. Endpoint, midpoint, intersection, center, and perpendicular snaps ensure that an interactive edit still conforms to drafting standards. For an even faster workflow, combine grip editing with Polar Tracking or direct distance entry.
