AutoCAD Tip: Crop Xrefs Non-Destructively with XCLIP

Today’s quick win: use XCLIP to crop external references neatly without exploding or redrawing.

Why XCLIP?

  • Non-destructive: visually hides unneeded portions of an Xref or block while keeping the source intact.
  • Cleaner sheets: show only the area you want in each viewport or detail.
  • Faster navigation: reduce on-screen clutter for quicker editing and plotting.

Core workflow

  1. Attach the reference (XREF palette) using Relative Path for better portability.
  2. Run XCLIP and select the Xref or block.
  3. Choose New boundary, then pick:
    • Rectangular for quick boxes, or
    • Polygonal for precise, irregular boundaries, or
    • Select polyline to use an existing closed polyline as the clip.
  4. Use Invert clip when you need to show everything outside the boundary (great for masking around a detail).
  5. Repeat: Place the same Xref multiple times with unique XCLIPs to create different cropped views from a single source.

Display and plotting control

  • Set XCLIPFRAME to control the clip boundary’s visibility:
    • 0 = not displayed, not plotted
    • 1 = displayed and plotted
    • 2 = displayed, not plotted (recommended while editing)
  • If frames persist in plots, verify XCLIPFRAME=2 or 0 and REGEN before publishing.

Editing and reuse

  • Need to refine a boundary? XCLIP > Generate polyline creates an editable copy of the current boundary. Edit that polyline, then reapply XCLIP using Select polyline.
  • To switch quickly between boundary variants, keep a small set of saved polylines on a non-plot layer and reassign as needed.

Best practices

  • Plan for viewports: create detail-specific XCLIPs that match your sheet scales and extents.
  • Avoid over-clipping: use the simplest boundary that does the job to keep grip edits and maintenance easy.
  • Remember: XCLIP only hides content; it doesn’t reduce file size or “trim” geometry. The full Xref is still referenced.
  • For images or PDFs, use IMAGECLIP or PDFCLIP instead of XCLIP.
  • Keep VISRETAIN=1 so your layer tweaks to the Xref persist across reloads.

Troubleshooting tips

  • Nothing clips? Ensure the object is an Xref or block (XCLIP doesn’t clip raw linework).
  • Boundary missing in model but prints? Set XCLIPFRAME=2, or temporarily 0 for plotting.
  • Performance slow in complex Xrefs? Combine XCLIP with layer filters and LAYISO to reduce what’s displayed.

  • Create a command alias (via ACAD.PGP) like XC => XCLIP for faster access.
  • Store common boundary polylines in a Tool Palette for drag-and-drop reuse.
