AutoCAD Tip: Create Precise Parallel Geometry with AutoCAD OFFSET

Creating parallel offsets is one of the fastest ways to build accurate walls, road edges, pipe routes, clearances, frames, and repeated profiles in AutoCAD. The OFFSET command produces a new object at a specified distance from selected geometry while preserving the original object.

Start the command by typing OFFSET or O at the Command Line. AutoCAD will ask for an offset distance, the object to offset, and the side on which to place the new geometry.

  • Enter a fixed distance when the separation is known, such as 6 for a 6-inch wall thickness or 150 for a 150 mm clearance.
  • Select the source object: lines, polylines, circles, arcs, ellipses, splines, and xlines can all be offset.
  • Click the destination side to tell AutoCAD where the copied geometry belongs.
  • Press Enter to repeat the operation using the same offset distance, or choose another object without restarting the command.

For architectural plans, offsetting a centerline twice is often more reliable than drawing wall faces manually. For example, create a centerline for a corridor, then offset it equally in both directions to establish precise wall locations. This approach makes late design changes easier because the centerline remains a useful reference.

Use the Multiple option when you need several parallel objects at the same increment. After launching OFFSET and entering the distance, type M for Multiple. Each click on the desired side creates another offset from the previously generated object. This is especially useful for:

  • Grid lines and parking stall layouts
  • Concentric circles and rings
  • Road lanes, curbs, and setback lines
  • Mechanical duct, piping, or cable-tray clearances
  • Repeated framing or panel-spacing details

When offsetting polylines, remember that the result depends on the source geometry and its vertices. A closed polyline offset inward may fail if the requested distance is too large for tight corners or narrow sections. If this happens, reduce the offset distance, simplify the polyline, or inspect small segments that may be creating self-intersections.

The Layer option is another valuable control. By default, AutoCAD creates the offset object on the current layer. Choose Layer and set it to Source when the new object should inherit the original object’s layer. This is helpful when maintaining established drawing standards, because wall lines, utility routes, and existing-condition elements can remain on their assigned layers automatically.

For circles, OFFSET creates larger or smaller concentric circles. For open objects such as lines and arcs, the offset may extend or shorten based on the surrounding geometry. Always zoom in around corners and intersections after offsetting; use TRIM, EXTEND, FILLET, or PEDIT as needed to clean up the result.

A dependable workflow is to keep Object Snap enabled, offset the primary geometry, then verify key distances with DIST or MEASUREGEOM. This takes only seconds and helps prevent errors that can become costly later in documentation or construction.
