AutoCAD Tip: Convert DWG Files to Older Versions Using Save As

Converting a drawing to an earlier DWG format with Save As ensures teammates, consultants, or clients on older releases can open your files without surprises.

How to convert with Save As

  • Open the drawing and verify it is error-free (run AUDIT, then PURGE unused items).
  • Press F12 or choose Application Menu > Save As.
  • In “Files of type,” pick the required DWG version (for example, an earlier release like 2018/2013/2010).
  • Click Tools > Options in the Save As dialog to review save settings, then confirm Save.

Smart defaults and safeguards

  • Set a default save format: Options > Open and Save > Save As. This reduces accidental saves to the wrong version across projects.
  • Preserve graphics for newer objects: Set PROXYGRAPHICS to 1 before Save As so downstream users can at least see AEC or custom objects without having enablers installed.
  • Flatten vertical objects (when required): If you must guarantee editability for non-AutoCAD users, consider exploding specialized objects (e.g., use AECTOACAD in verticals) in a copy of the file.
  • Maintain annotation fidelity: Verify annotative text/dimensions display correctly after conversion. If needed, add the required scales first, then Save As.

What can change across versions

  • Advanced objects (AEC, Civil 3D, Plant, MEP) may become proxies in older formats. Provide a PDF alongside the DWG so recipients can verify intent.
  • Some features introduced in newer releases may degrade to simpler geometry or lose certain behaviors (constraints, gradient transparency nuances, etc.). Test critical details in a sample file.
  • Materials, visual styles, and certain rendering data may not fully back-save; consider exporting presentation views separately.

Naming and traceability

  • Embed the target version in the filename, e.g., Project_XYZ_A1_2013.dwg, to prevent confusion.
  • Use DWGPROPS to record the target version and a short note in Comments for audit trails.
  • Create a “/Deliverables/Versions/” folder in your project structure for consistent archiving.

When Save As isn’t enough

  • Many files to convert? Use DWG Convert (Batch) to process entire folders while applying a standard output folder and format.
  • Need to ship everything a recipient needs? Use eTransmit to bundle drawings, referenced files, plot styles, and fonts.
  • Interoperability over editability? Save As DXF for broader compatibility with CAM/CNC or non-Autodesk tools.

Quick checklist before sharing

  • Run AUDIT and PURGE.
  • Set PROXYGRAPHICS=1 (if specialized objects are present).
  • Confirm annotation scales and viewport locks.
  • Save As to the required DWG version with clear naming.
  • Zip with eTransmit if external references or custom resources are used.
