What OVERKILL does:

  • After importing PDFs or survey data and before dimensioning or hatching.
  • Before creating boundaries, regions, or offsetting complex edges.
  • After binding Xrefs or merging consultant geometry.
  • Prior to data extraction, takeoffs, or CAM/export workflows to avoid duplicates in counts or toolpaths.

  • Save the drawing, then type OVERKILL (from Express Tools or command line).
  • Select the target objects (use filters or select all if appropriate).
  • In the dialog:
    • Set Tolerance to a sensible small value (e.g., 0.001–1.0 drawing units depending on project scale).
    • Choose which object properties to compare (layer, color, linetype, lineweight, etc.).
    • Enable options to combine collinear segments and optimize polylines.
  • Run and review the command line report to see how many objects were removed or simplified.

  • Tolerance: Start small to avoid collapsing intentional gaps; increase only if tiny overlaps persist.
  • Property comparison: If design intent ignores cosmetic differences, allow OVERKILL to consider objects duplicates across color/linetype; otherwise match on those properties.
  • Collinear consolidation: Turn on to merge segmented lines from PDF/survey imports into continuous elements that are easier to offset and hatch.
  • Polyline optimization: Reduces vertex count and eliminates zero-length segments that often break OFFSET, FILLET, and HATCH.

  • Pre-filter with QSELECT or layer filters to focus only on 2D linework and polylines you want to clean.
  • Run OVERKILL before HATCH to prevent leaks and micro-slivers that cause slow, fragmented fills.
  • Follow with PURGE (and consider LAYMRG for consolidating similar layers) to reduce file size further.
  • Use AUDIT if the file has a history of crashes or recoveries to ensure database integrity after cleanup.
