AutoCAD Tip: Best Practices for Attaching and Managing Image References in AutoCAD

Image references let you use logos, site photos, aerial imagery, scanned sketches, and product graphics in AutoCAD without embedding large raster files directly into the drawing. The key is to attach them deliberately and manage their paths from the beginning.

Use the IMAGEATTACH command, or choose Attach from the Reference palette, to place a raster image such as JPG, PNG, TIF, BMP, or ECW. AutoCAD creates a link to the source file, keeping the DWG more manageable than an embedded-image workflow.

  • Prepare the image first. Crop unnecessary margins and use only the resolution needed for the intended output. An oversized photo can slow pan, zoom, regeneration, and plotting performance.
  • Use a project folder structure. Store the DWG and its images in a controlled project directory rather than linking to a desktop, downloads folder, or personal network location.
  • Set a sensible path type. In the External References palette, use Relative Path when the image will travel with the project folder. Relative paths are especially useful when transmitting files to clients, consultants, or archive locations.
  • Specify insertion settings intentionally. At attachment, you can define the insertion point, scale, and rotation on screen. For imagery with known real-world scale, enter a precise scale factor rather than adjusting visually.

After attaching the image, select it and use the Properties palette to refine its display. You can adjust brightness, contrast, fade, and transparency without modifying the original image file. A faded reference is often easier to trace over, while a higher-contrast image may be better for review or presentation sheets.

For cleaner drawings, place image references on a dedicated layer, such as XREF-IMAGE or REF-RASTER. This makes it easier to control visibility, plotting, locking, and viewport-specific overrides. Consider setting the image layer to No Plot if the image is only a tracing or coordination aid.

Use IMAGECLIP to display only the useful portion of an attached image. This is preferable to covering unwanted areas with wipeouts or masks because the clip remains associated with the image reference. A polygonal clipping boundary is particularly helpful for irregular site photos or scanned plans that contain excess background.

  • Turn on Transparency in the Plot dialog when transparent portions of PNG or TIFF images must print correctly.
  • Use DRAWORDER to send imagery behind linework, hatches, dimensions, and annotations.
  • Lock the image layer once positioned to prevent accidental moves or scaling.
  • Check the reference status in the External References palette before issuing drawings. A “Not Found” image path can leave recipients with an incomplete sheet.

When sharing a project, use ETRANSMIT to package the DWG with its dependent image files, fonts, plot styles, and external references. This is one of the most reliable ways to prevent broken raster-image links.
