AutoCAD Tip: Automate AutoCAD Standards with DWS and Batch Checks

Automate your standards checks to eliminate rework, keep drawings clean, and make QA a background task—without slowing the team down. Here’s a focused workflow you can put in place today.

  • Build the standard once:
    • Create a DWS from your best template (DWT). Include Layers, Linetypes, Text Styles, Dimension Styles, and Multileader Styles.
    • Store the DWS on a read-only, shared location (network or cloud). Version it clearly, e.g., Company_Std_A1_2025-01.dws.
    • Reduce bloat: purge unused styles before saving the DWS.
  • Attach the standard to every project file:
    • Manage tab > CAD Standards > Configure > Add your DWS.
    • Keep only the minimal set of DWS files to avoid conflicts; one per discipline works well.
    • Turn on notifications so checks occur on open/save and at intervals.
  • Automate the fixes:
    • Run Check Standards and use Replace to map nonstandard names to approved ones (e.g., layer “Walls” to “A-WALL”).
    • Avoid Add unless you are intentionally updating the DWS; Add expands your standard and can dilute control.
    • Document mappings in a shared note so the team makes consistent choices.
  • Batch check entire projects:
    • Use the Batch Standards Checker to scan folders of DWGs against your DWS and produce a report.
    • Schedule regular checks (nightly or weekly) to catch drift early and keep the model clean.
    • Distribute reports to leads; track recurring violations to guide training and template updates.
  • Make it part of templates and onboarding:
    • Embed DWS associations into your DWTs so every new sheet/detail is governed from day one.
    • Create a quick “Fix vs Add vs Ignore” checklist for drafters, and keep it in your project kickoff packet.
  • Tackle common pitfalls:
    • Multiple DWS files can conflict; prioritize by discipline or project phase to avoid ambiguous results.
    • If the shared DWS path breaks, checks won’t run. Use a consistent UNC path and test it off‑VPN.
    • Xrefs can import nonstandard content; check Xrefs separately and standardize at the source.
  • Layer Translator as a preflight:
    • Before checking, run Layer Translator to map legacy layer names to standards; then Check Standards to enforce styles.
  • Measure and improve:
    • Track the top five violations (e.g., wrong text style, rogue layers). Update the DWS or templates to remove the root cause.
    • Include standards compliance in QA gates before plotting or issuing packages.
