AutoCAD Tip: AutoCAD Layer Naming Convention

Consistent, searchable layer names cut rework, speed selection, and make collaboration painless—especially across teams and external partners.

Adopt a simple, scalable pattern

  • Use a fixed delimiter: prefer a hyphen (-) for readability and reliable filtering.
  • Follow a four-part schema: Discipline–Major–Minor–Status. Example: A-WALL-FULL-NEW.
  • Keep names concise (ideally under 32–40 characters) and UPPERCASE for legibility in dialogs and plots.
  • Avoid special characters and the vertical bar “|” (reserved by xrefs). Stick to A–Z, 0–9, hyphen, and underscore.
  • One purpose per layer: do not mix annotations, hatch, and model geometry on the same layer.
  • Align with a known standard when possible (e.g., AIA/USNCS or ISO 13567) and document any company-specific variants.

Recommended building blocks

  • Discipline codes: A (Architecture), S (Structural), C (Civil), M (Mechanical), P (Plumbing), E (Electrical), T (Telecom), X (Other).
  • Major groups: WALL, DOOR, COLN, SLAB, DUCT, PIPE, POWR, LITE, ANNO.
  • Minor groups: FULL, DEMO, RECP, SUP, RET, TEXT, DIMS, HATCH, GRID.
  • Status/phase: NEW, EXST, DEMO, TMP, SD, DD, CD. Use only what your team needs.

Practical examples you can deploy today

  • Architecture: A-WALL-FULL-NEW, A-DOOR-ANNO-DIMS, A-ANNO-HATCH-CD
  • Structural: S-COLN-STEEL-EXST, S-SLAB-OPEN-NEW
  • MEP: M-DUCT-SUP-NEW, P-PIPE-CHW-RET, E-POWR-RECP-DEM
  • Optional location suffix for scale: A-WALL-FULL-L02, E-LITE-FIX-L03

Implementation workflow in AutoCAD

  • Seed your template: create a DWT with the full layer list, properties (color, linetype, plot), and descriptions. Store it centrally.
  • Translate legacy drawings: use LAYTRANS to map old names to the new convention and save the mapping file for reuse.
  • Enforce with standards: attach a DWS in the CAD Standards Manager to flag non-compliant layer names.
  • Control xrefs: leave xref layers as xrefname|layer. Set VISRETAIN=1 so overrides persist locally without renaming xref layers.
  • Speed visibility controls: build Layer Filters by prefix (A-, E-, M-) and save Layer States for common views (e.g., “Plot-Arch,” “Coord-MEP”).
  • Batch rename safely: for large sets, use the Rename dialog (RENAME) or a vetted script/LISP in a copy of the file set.

Governance and QA

  • Publish a one-page legend with allowed codes and examples in your project start kit and DWT.
  • Audit quickly with QSELECT/FILTER or LAYERWALK to catch outliers before issue.
  • Prohibit ad‑hoc layers in production. Route requests for new codes through a single CAD manager.

Pro tip: don’t encode lineweight or color in the name—let the layer’s properties and plot style control graphics. The name should describe meaning, not styling.
