AutoCAD Tip: ANNOUPDATE — Sync Annotative Objects to Annotation Scale

Keep annotative objects consistent across scales by refreshing them with ANNOUPDATE.

What ANNOUPDATE does

  • Synchronizes selected annotative objects with the current Annotation Scale (CANNOSCALE).
  • Adds the current scale to each object’s scale list so it displays correctly in viewports or model space.
  • Ideal after importing content, changing standards, or resetting scale lists.

When to use it

  • Dimensions, leaders, text, blocks, or hatches appear too large/small or disappear in certain viewports.
  • Templates were updated and existing drawings must match the latest annotative scales.
  • Multiple viewport scales are required for the same model space annotations.

Core workflow

  • Set the desired Annotation Scale on the status bar (CANNOSCALE).
  • Run ANNOUPDATE and select:
    • Problem annotations only (faster), or
    • Use a filter (QSELECT/FILTER) to target types: Dimension, MLeader, Text, Block (Annotative = Yes), Hatch (Annotative = Yes).
  • Press Enter to apply. REGEN if needed.

Viewport-driven updates

  • Activate a paper space viewport set to the target scale.
  • Ensure the viewport’s Annotation Scale matches its view scale (check the status bar while the viewport is active).
  • Run ANNOUPDATE on model space annotations that should appear in that viewport.
  • Repeat for each unique viewport scale used on the sheet.

Key system variables to verify

  • ANNOALLVISIBLE: Set to 0 to hide scales not assigned (preferred for clean sheets). Use 1 temporarily to locate missing objects.
  • ANNOAUTOSCALE: Turn On (1) while you’re establishing scales so new scales are auto-added to annotative objects; turn Off (0) to lock down later.
  • CANNOSCALE: Must match the scale you want applied before running ANNOUPDATE.

Best practices

  • Start with a clean scale list: SCALELISTEDIT > Reset to your standard, then SAVE to your template.
  • Keep each annotative object’s scale list lean. Use OBJECTSCALE to remove unused scales and keep files light.
  • Convert legacy content: Set Annotative = Yes in the Properties palette (Ctrl+1), then run ANNOUPDATE to add needed scales.
  • Batch with care: Use QSELECT to update only annotation types to avoid unnecessary processing on large DWGs.
  • For blocks: Ensure the block definition is Annotative before running ANNOUPDATE; otherwise, update the definition in BEDIT first.

Troubleshooting quick checks

  • Nothing updates: Confirm the objects are actually Annotative = Yes.
  • Objects still missing: Temporarily set ANNOALLVISIBLE = 1 to find them, add the right scale with ANNOUPDATE, then set back to 0.
  • Inconsistent display across sheets: Verify each viewport’s Annotation Scale and that those scales exist in the objects’ scale lists.
  • Scale corruption: Reset with SCALELISTEDIT, then reapply ANNOUPDATE per scale.

Pro tips

  • Create a Tool Palette button or keyboard alias for ANNOUPDATE to encourage routine use.
  • Document your project’s standard scales in the template and educate teams to set CANNOSCALE before they annotate.
  • After major Xref or standards updates, run a drawing-wide pass: set each required scale, ANNOUPDATE filtered annotations, REGENALL.
